BIG SHROOMS

These playful giant fibreglass mushrooms morphing into a goat, pig, bull and bird speak of a world on the brink of toxically mutating. They were created as large sketches for future ideas and now lurk in a child’s fantasy garden at a zoo in Scotland. Watch out children!

2009 Fibreglass

Kitsch is to replace the extraordinary original with something simplistic, unreal and often vulgar. This is best portrayed in Beetle where a 6’ black shiny beetle has blonde hair growing out of its front and backside, as though its original form was not good enough. It declares, “get with the program, everything needs a little adornment, even you bug”.

These phallocentric female mushrooms seem to exist in an altered reality but fit in quite comfortably and unapologetically wherever they are.

These scallops have grown locks of silky hair. An evolutionary metamorphosis has occurred through either their own impulse towards self consciousness and vanity and/or a result of chemical overload in the sea.

2011 Human hair, scallop shells

An oversized vanity table is toppling over. It is being reclaimed by natural forces as moss covers its surfaces, destabilising it. It is only so long that the natural world will allow our vanities to continue, either through the inevitability of ageing or planetary uprising.

An assortment of North Sea cobbles have been covered in gold vinyl.  The stones that have taken millennia to form are not good enough.  By covering them in a cheap slick veneer Brown is exposing our preference of the kitsch over the timeless, priceless beauty of what is naturally present
